Please take a look at our post below with news from our Green Schools Committee:

This week Arnold Donnelly from Inland Fisheries Ireland came to visit our school. He showed a powerpoint presentation to 5th and 6th class with facts about the different fish and insect life that can be found in our lakes and rivers. We learned if they are studying a lake or river and cannot find any fish, there is a special rod they can use that creates a shock in the water and this makes the fish and insects come out from where they are hiding under the rocks and the gravel and appear. Arnold also told us that if he wanted to get a sample of lake water life he can place a net in the stream and kick the gravel and disturb the fishlife that way too. Too much shampoo and detergents can harm our water systems. Fishing as a hobby is okay as long as you don’t take lots of fish by using a big net. Arnold showed us samples of the lake water from Ballincurry lake which contained some of the following insects and fish: freshwater shrimp, caddis, mayfly and stickleback fish. We learned that the Glen in Glinsk is connected to the river Shannon. We really enjoyed Arnold’s visit and learned lots. Thanks to Ms Nolan and Pio Byrnes for organising this visit.

This week we filled the bird feeders with nuts and seeds. Together Ruby, Donnacha, Darragh and Willow hepled. We hope the birds come to eat the food. Blue tits, robins and crows come to visit my granny’s garden (Donnacha).
