Let’s Make Butter!

In the lead up to our visit to Hilltop Dairies, Junior and Senior Infants have been learning all about the farm.  We learned that lots of food in the supermarket comes from the farm.  Cows provide us with milk which we use to make cream, yogurt, butter and ice cream.

As part of our learning we decided to try making butter ourselves!  We put cream in small containers and shook the cream with all our might.   After a few minutes the children could feel something solid in their container, they peeked in and to their amazement could see a solid yellow lump.   This solid yellow lump was butter and the whitish liquid was buttermilk.  All the shaking had turned the cream into butter!  We then got the chance to taste the butter with some crackers.  All the children agreed it tasted great!
