
All classes recently enjoyed an African drumming session with Barra Ó’Flanniagh from Slí na Crói Gatherings based in Sligo. Pupils played the Djembes drums which come from Guinea in West Africa. These drums are covered in goat skin and the larger drums are often covered on cow skin. Barra taught us a traditional African song to sing while learning simple drumming beats. Pupils then had an opportunity to create their own drum beat which everyone else in the circle tried before the next pupil changed the drumming beat again, which really encouraged good listening skills.
